DISPUTED RESULT – For most locals the results of the referendum, with two thirds in favour of remaining, were clear cut, but many separatist supporters allege there were significant irregularities in the vote. Growing voices in that camp insist that a fair result cannot be achieved through a referendum and a unilateral declaration of independence is required… 

MUTED RESPONSE – Federal and provincial governments have downplayed the recent declaration of independence by separatist supporters, stating that it has no legal basis. Foreign governments have so far refrained from commenting, declaring it an internal matter. Police indicate they have taken no action against the separatists as they have not broken any laws, but continue to monitor… 

TRAGEDY AT FARM – The farm of one of the declarants of independence became the site of a tragedy today as two officers and three individuals on the farm were killed. Five others were arrested. Gunfire erupted as police attempted to execute a search warrant following reports of illegal weapons…  

MILITARY NOT REQUIRED – Despite continued violence and multiple standoffs between separatist militias and police, provincial officials have not requested military support and are unwilling to declare a state of emergency. Instead, they are asking for calm and stating that while they do not agree with the separatists or their methods, they recognize their legitimate grievances… 

CALL FOR NEGOTIATIONS – Foreign officials have called for negotiations to resolve disputes in the face of growing violence largely driven by separatist attacks on police and other targets. Concerns have been raised about the declaration of a state of emergency by the federal government, the suspension of the Charter and the movement of armed forces into the province. Repression of a movement for national recognition is not acceptable, the American ambassador noted… 

A TROUBLED SUMMER – The agriculture industry is raising alarm about the impact the continued violence between separatist militias and federal forces is having on their business. Drone attacks by both sides have downed aerial crop spraying and ranchers have been unable to contract truckers to move livestock… 

FOREIGN INVOLVEMENT – Federal officials claim there is growing evidence of movement of weapons and people across the southern border. Speaking on background, they stated that the growing sophistication in both weapons and tactics by separatist units indicates they are getting training and material support… 

A SOMBRE THANKSGIVING – Normally a time for gathering with friends and family to celebrate a successful harvest, this year’s Thanksgiving is subdued. Travel through many areas continues to be difficult, with police and military checkpoints on most major roads. Despite the continued and increasing presence of the army and police throughout all regions, attacks by separatist militias continue. Railway lines have been bombed by drone, irrigation pipes and canals disrupted. Both sides blame the other for escalating violence…
